Let It Shine: The National Dissemination
Network
Let It Shine Network
Originally funded by the
NEH and organized and maintained by the Thomas Day Education
Project, Let It Shine is a national dissemination network of teachers,
museum educators, and historic-site educators interested in developing
& promoting best teaching methods and practices in African American
history for grades K-12.
There are several
instructional efforts spawned by the Let It Shine and Crafting Freedom
workshops underway in schools from Charleston to Brooklyn,
from Seattle to Baton Rouge. One good way to stay involved is to monitor and
participate in the "Let It Shine" e-group discussion board and learn
more about the kind of instructional strategies educators are thinking
about and creating.
Join the Let It Shine Network E-Group at

Message Board down for lack of use. If you'd like to re-activate it,
please contact tdek05@aol.com.
Thank you.
The LIS e-group is for participants in the Crafting
Freedom 2004 and 2005 workshops as well as for participants in the Let
Shine 2003 workshop.
The purpose of the LIS Network e-group is to
provide an easily accessible forum for discussing methods of infusing
African American history and culture into K-12 instruction, as well as
to discuss issues raised by this history and the teaching of it.
While open and honest discussion is vital, comments that are deemed by
the e-group administrator to be unconstructive will be eliminated from the
message board. Also, anyone who attempts to use the e-group who does
not meet the criteria for participation in the "Let It Shine" network will be eliminated from the message board. Note:
When you elect to post a message, you will be asked to provide a name.
You do not have to use your real name, If you also provide an email
address, you will be notified if someone posts a response to your post. To post a message, simply go to the message
board by clicking on the link below and post a message. However, if you wish only to review posted
messages, just go the link below and view the postings.
Another way to become a member of Let It
Shine, is to take the "on-line" course in Basic Black
History provided through this website.
Self-Guided Study
The Basic Black History,
1400-1865
self-guided on-line study will be offered again beginning in fall 2005 if
10 educators sign up to
be a part of it. The cost is $50 per participant plus cost of
materials. The self-guided study is divided
into four units. Each unit corresponds to one of the four videos that
make up the PBS documentary series, Africans in
America and readings in the teacher-tested textbook, African
American Odyssey Vol.2 authored chiefly by historian and TDEP
advisory board member, Dr. Darlene Clarke Hine. In the self-guided
study, participants work largely at their own pace and convenience.
However, each unit has been given a recommended time frame for
completion. There will be two group activities for each unit that will
occur during this time frame. We hope that familiarity with this
material will breed curiosity and excitement. Teachers have found this
to be a great way to get "technology credits" and have also found it to
be a helpful prior learning experienced for those who plan to
participate in summer TDEP workshops!
