To apply to the Crafting Freedom Institute, you must submit  an Application Packet:

TO APPLY:

Step 1:  Read all the Institute Details. These contain all the detailed information you will need to know about the institute.

Step 2:   Read Application Packet Details below.

Step 3: Access and fill in your online NEH Cover Sheet by going to the NEH website (www.neh.gov/online/education/participants) or by clicking  Cover Sheet.  When you are at the first screen of the online application, make sure to click in the circle that says "SUMMER SEMINAR OR INSTITUTE."

Step 4:  Submit your Application Packet postmarked no later than March 1, 2007.
Please mail your completed and collated application by US mail or other service like Federal Express or UPS. We can also accept completed applications via email as Word Attachments. However, it is best if you mail two hard copies of all materials in the same packet to insure that we receive all components in a timely manner.

All application materials should be sent to the Crafting Freedom Institute director at one of the addresses listed below. Please do not send application materials and reference letters to the NEH as this will result in delay and possible elimination of your application.

APPLICATION PACKET DETAILS:

Cover Sheet

The application cover sheet must be filled out online at the NEH website (see Step 3 above).. Please fill out by completing each section and following the prompts. When you are finished, print a copy of the form for your files and two for your application packet. MAKE SURE TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE COVER SHEET PROCESS. You will be given a  form view to check for accuracy and make needed corrections to the cover sheet. You must click the "submit" button to indicate the form is correct and completed for your cover sheet to be finalized. You may apply to only ONE NEH institute or seminar.

Résumé

Please include a detailed résumé that provides: your education, teaching experience,  important "other" work/life experience as well as any special experience, awards, or honors you may have had. Remember to submit two copies.


The Application Essay

The most important part of the completed application packet is your Application Essay. It  should be between 2 - 4 pages and no more than 4 pages. It should be written with a word processing program. Attention should be paid to grammar and typographical errors.Your essay should include information about:

• Your professional background, interest and experience in the subject of the workshop--19th century American history and culture
• Your special perspectives, skills, or experiences that may contribute to the workshop experience 
• All pertinent information that touches upon Selection Criteria (Click here.)

EARLY REVIEW OPTION: To help you make your application more competitive, you may submit your application essay  before February 1. Please mention in a cover letter that you want to have your essay reviewed and are taking advantage of the "early review" option. Also, provide a mailing address or fax number so your essay can be quickly returned to you with feedback. You may also decide to submit other components of your application early, however, they will  not be critiqued.


 2 Letters of Recommendation

Applicants should also include 2 letters of recommendation from TWO individuals  (e.g., school principal, department head, district administrator, or home-schooling association president and someone who can attest to your commitment to teaching with Institute resources.) It will be helpful to provide those writing your letters of recommendations with a copy of  Institute details and, if possible, with your application essay.

It is the applicant's responsibility to obtain these recommendations and to include two copies of each letter of recommendation in the application packet.

If the person writing the letter does not want you to view their letter, request that they provide you with sealed envelopes containing their letters of recommendation so you can include them in your application packet. Be sure to ask for letters of recommendations early so that you receive them in time to mail with your application packet and to meet the deadline of March 1st. Please remember that it's your responsibility to tell those writing the letters of recommendation  to return the letters to you in a timely manner.


Notification Procedure

We will confirm receipt of your application packet by email. After two weeks, if you have not received confirmation of receipt, please call or email to notify us.  Mail can be slow but we want to make sure we have received all submitted applications.
     
Successful applicants will be notified of their selection early in April and must notify us by April 15, 2007 whether they accept or decline the offer. Applicants who will not be home during the notification period should provide an address and phone number where they can be reached. No information concerning the status of an application will be available prior to the official notification period.
